Chennai: The flood triggered by heavy rain in the past few days may have issued waste from cooum and the River Adyar, but the current has encouraged everything back to the ground, especially to Elliot and Marina coast.
A team from a city-based national center for coastal research (NCCR) visited two beaches on November 21 and found large amounts of garbage on Elliot Beach in Besant Nagar, while Marina had a puddle mixed with waste.
“The waste was from cooum and the river adyar.
It was pushed into the sea along the coast because of the movement to the south.
It will be stored in a high tide and so low tide, it is stuck on the sand and from some distributed all the wind,” Pravakar said Mishra, NCCR scientist.
In the 2018 article published in ‘Science at this time’, NCCR scientists said almost one lakh tons of debris including plastic, rubber and formacol were driven to Chennai Beach during the December 2015 floods.
Similarly, after severe spells in November 2017 triggered a situation like a flood , Measurement in the mouth of the two rivers and marinas, Elliot Beach and Thiruvanmiyur revealed most waste is plastic.
These include 28% plastic bags, bottles and 14% caps, 13% straws and 9% food wrappers.
The other e-coli bacterial population and coliformin fecal 5-6 times higher in the mouth and coast of the river as soon as the rain shows the presence of waste.
“Just clean the beach won’t solve the problem.
Better garbage management is needed,” said Mishra.
