New Delhi: China has decided to suspend the project for the construction of a hybrid energy system in Sri Lanka by Chinese company Sino Soar Hybrid Technology, said a media report.
This system must be built on three North Islands located close to India.
India reportedly protested with Sri Lanka in January this year after Chinese companies got a contract to build solar power plants in the North Islands.
Sri Lanka recently gave a contract to Chinese companies for the development of the East Container Terminal in Port Colombo, the Lanka project was first committed to India and Japan.
The Chinese Embassy in Colombo said in a tweet that the solar power system project in the North Islands in Lanka had been suspended due to security issues expressed by third parties even though it did not name India.
The embassy then stated that the same company has now signed a contract with Maldives.
“Sino Soar Hybrid Technology, is being suspended to build a hybrid energy system in 3 North Islands because of ‘security issues’ from third parties, has signed a contract with Maladvian Govt on November 29 to establish a solar power plant in Maldives,” said the Chinese Embassy.
