WASHINGTON: Instagram boss on Wednesday pushed the reddish view of the impact of photo sharing applications in adolescents in testimony to US parliamentarians which contradicted the news report based on the company’s research.
Adam Mosseri argued that services could help fight for young people, after documents leaked by people in the company raised danger concerns, including the 2019 study that said Instagram made the body’s image problem worse for one of three teenagers.
“Sometimes young people come to Instagram dealing with hard things in their lives.
I believe Instagram can help many of them at that time,” Mosseri wrote.
“This is something suggested by our research,” he added in a written testimony prepared for his appearance before the Senate Trade Subcommittee.
His statement came as a social media network run by Facebook Marri Meal Battle Crisis driven by the company’s own research, and who had rewarded the increase in US regulation of the year.
The documents leaked by Facebook Whistleblower Frances Haugen also included a 2020 report stating that 32% of teenage girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram worsened it.
Facebook has pushed back fiercely against the Wall Street Journal report string based on findings, and the next series for the US media consortium, on the grounds of research miscaracterised.
Senator Richard Blumenthal and Marsha Blackburn lead hearing, the latest in the series of investigating how social media can make teenagers feel worse about themselves.
“These half steps are not enough.
Instagram must make a real solution to improve data security and security,” Blackburn Tweet in front of the trial.
‘Never been fully safe’farbook has risen from other scandals as involving Cambridge Analytica, a UK consulting company that uses millions of Facebook personal data to target political advertisements.
In that case, CEO Mark Zuckerberg went to Washington to apologize, and the company approved the completion of $ 5 billion with a US regulator.
However, the leading social media network faces at least one investigation driven by the latest crisis: US state consortium announces in November Probe Meta Engineering to attract young users and the potential generated.
Facing pressure, the company announced in September “pause” in developing the Instagram version for children under 13 when criticism was built on the impact on young mental health.
On Wednesday night, Instagram announced new protection for young users as suggested a break if they spend a lot of time on the platform.
The announcement took the acceptance of alert from parliamentarians, which questioned whether it was an effort to budget before the trial.
Stephen Balkam, Founder and CEO of Advocacy Group Family Online Institute, said the pre-heard announcement was the Washington tradition but noted they would not make the application problems missing.
“Instagram is safer than that.
I think Instagram is less toxic for teenagers than that.
But it will never be perfect, it will never be completely safe.
But then it’s true of all social media,” he told AFP.
