Kolkata: The meteorological department at Kolkata Airport has spread a manual reader to assess the Visual Runway (RVR) range in the midst of landing strips.
This will compensate for automatic instruments to measure the mid-rvr that has been damaged for a month.
The absence of a mid-rvr reading caused a major flight operating disruption on Wednesday when the fog had enveloped the airport.

But on Wednesday morning, the touchdown (landing) must be suspended when visibility fell below 550 when taking off under 200 m because of the absence of mid-rvr.
Reading will be provided by full officials positioned near the midpoint when there is a fog.
He will regularly take a reading manually, record how many center lamps runway can be seen to calculate the visibility range.
This information will be forwarded to ATC which will submit it to the pilot.
“The MET department has used manual operations from portable mid-middle instruments from Thursday.
This will continue to operate the system manually until the instrument is automatically repaired or replaced.
The operation can now continue to be disturbed until the visibility decreases dramatically,” said Director of Airport C Pattabhi.
Airlines operating outside the Kolkata Lega airport on developing because this means fewer diversion and delays in fog days.
“The diversion not only leads to additional fuel consumption because flights travel to other airports and then return after the elevator fog, they also endanger the flight schedule because the next flight is operated by airplanes too,” said an airline official.
