Coimbatore: The quantity of separate waste collected by City Corporation has doubled in the last 10 days, said the corporate commissioner King Gopal Sunkara on Wednesday.
While around 90 tons of separate waste were collected in a day on average 10 days ago, gradually increased and touched 175 tons per day on Tuesday.
The Civic body collects 850 tons of average waste in a day.
Segregation on the source helps companies in removing waste easily.
Separate waste can be directly inserted into the shredder to cut it into pieces and use it for manure production.
Separate waste was also used to produce Vermicompost at the facilities available at Vellalore Dumping Yard, Commissioner told Tii.
Each of the 100 wards was given a target to collect two tons of separate waste a day.
With the encouragement of the sanitation inspectors of their respective environments, separate waste collections have increased in the past few days, the officer said.
“While some residents handed over degraded and not separate waste, in some areas, sanitation workers dumped them together during the door collection to the door defeating the goal.
It was set now by giving clear instructions,” he said.
Separate waste collection at the source level is an important aspect in Swachh Survekshan, the annual survey of cleanliness, cleanliness and sanitation carried out by centers throughout the country.
A sanitation inspector from the East Zone said there were several reluctance among the previous population when they were told to separate waste.
“But there are changes seen in the last few days in several areas.
When people realize that corporations means business, they tend to follow instructions.
Not degraded waste is collected once or twice a day, while degraded waste is collected regularly,” he said.
But there is still a lot to do to make the practice of norms, health officials said.
“Sanitary workers, sometimes, face population anger.
There is an instance when workers are custed by residents to convey the new government of the company,” said a sanitation inspector from the South Zone.
