Islamabad: The strong explosion caused by gas accumulation in the waste system under a private bank in the southern port city of Pakistan Karachi killed at least 12 people and injured 13 others on Saturday.
The civil authority recently asked the bank to empty the place so that the sewer can be cleaned.
Videos from explosion sites aired on TV stations show part of the place where the bank and adjacent fuel stations are blown to Smithereens.
The windows in other nearby buildings were destroyed while several cars and motorbikes parked were damaged.
Dr.
Sabir Memon, a doctor at the center of Trauma Karachi, said at least four among those who were injured were in critical condition.
He said the injury did not seem to be caused by bullet fractions, as in the explosion triggered by terrorists.
A few hours after the initial explosion, another smaller explosion occurred in the same location even because the rescue operation was taking place.
There were no further victims reported, although there was a possibility that some people were still trapped under the rubble, officials said.
Many waste channels in Karachi have been borne, most illegally, by building a concrete structure on it.
Karachi, who is responsible for 60 percent of Pakistani economic output, is a jammed city with a rampant construction and inadequate city service.
