Udhagamandalam: Heavy vehicles have been banned for a while to use the new national highway placed between Mettupalayam and coonor after some of the roads suffered damage to Kattery on Saturday.
The road was broken after a falling stone, said Selvam, engineer of the Highways National Division ‘wing state.
“It has weakened stretches.
Considering the risks involved, we have stopped heavy vehicle movements.
Repair work has begun and will be completed in two days,” he said, Monsoon’s rain slowed the pace of work in the past four months.
Activists urge the highway authority to use good materials and experts to build roads.
“After the road it should ensure easy navigation in the Ghat widened, heavy vehicles including parked trucks there,” he said.
