BHUBANESWAR: The first meeting of the 14-member expert committee formed to decide an assessment criteria for Class XII students of the state-run higher secondary school was organised here on Monday.
All 14-member have put forth their views on the alternative assessment criteria.
“We will discuss all possible means and we will reach a consensus soon.
We will have to meet again and to discuss and decide the final assessment criteria,” said Tushar Kanti Tripathy, vice-chairman of the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE).
The committee has to submit its report in 10 days after its formation on Saturday.
After cancelling the Class XII board examination, it has become a major challenge for the state government to decide an alternative assessment criterion in the absence of marks of any internal or annual examination in the last two years.
Only the Class X marks of students are available with the committee to assess the marks for Class XII.
Meanwhile, the teacher’s associations and parents sent their suggestions to the chief minister on possible alternative assessment criteria for Class XII students.
Convenor of All Odisha School-College Teachers and Employees United Forum, Pabitra Mahala, said, “It is very difficult to assess students on the basis of marks they secured in an examination two years back.
Many students improve in Class XII while performance of students also worsens compared to Class X boards.
Each student should get an additional percentage of marks, including highest marks obtained in a few subjects in Class X board examination.
Another concern raised by experts and educationists is that due to a faulty examination system our students must not lag behind students of other boards.
“It is indeed a serious challenge to find a solution to the marking system.
It needs careful and serious deliberation and step must be taken by the expert committee keeping in view both high scorers and moderate students.
Any meritorious student must not feel like a victim of the system,” said Golak Nayak, president of 622 category of college teachers association.
He said students should be divided into different categories on the basis of marks they secured in Class X and grace mark up to 10% of students be added to the Class X marks.
