Kolkata: Traffic police in Kolkata have fallen back on one of the oldest laws in the city to demand the latest vehicle in the road – low-speed electronic scooters that do not require registration or license to rise.
They have begun to demand the wrong e-scooter rider under the Calcutta police law 1866, which is used to demand slow moving vehicles such as cycles, pedicabs, carts and horse-drawn carts.
Last week had seen at least three different traffic guards slapping cases against e-scooter riders.
Jorabagan traffic guards, for example, slapped the case against e-scooterists who moved in the wrong direction.
“In the first case, the e-scooterist rose in the wrong direction at the busy MG Road-Cr Avenue Crossing.
We filed a complaint to the Jorasananko police below Section 66 (3) of the Calcutta police law relating to the penalty On the street, “said an officer.
In other cases reported from the Burrabazar area, the 156-year-old action was used to demand e-scooterists who had parked both illegal vehicles at the intersection, blocking the left turn.
The use of Calcutta police actions is not new in the city with police often use it to handle the Petty Road incident.
This action has been used in the past to slap the case against those who block traffic while riding elephants and camels.
Recently, it has been used in responding to riding with cyclists, carts and rickshaw pullers and carriage operators Horse.
