NEW DELHI: Scarcity of critical care medical equipment has compelled India to permit entry of compacted used bio gear for re-use because of the prevailing Covid-19 scenario even as it drops under the illegal class as’toxic waste’.
Considering potential use of such gear through the outbreak, the environment ministry has contributed”one-time consent” to allow these utilized critical care gear for re-use.
The ministry in its own order stated,”In light of the prevailing Covid scenario in the nation and potential usage of these gear in the continuing outbreak the ministry has chosen to permit one-time approval for export of used critical care equipment such as re-use which have already been imported and are still lying at various ports/airports according to June 8″ “This equipment is covered under Annex-9 of the Basel Convention as a result of chance of hazardous material and needs prior informed approval.
Therefore, it’s critically important to track its use and track its end-of-life disposal,” said Satish Sinha, associate manager, Toxics Link.
