SURAT: Three patients, undergoing treatment at different Ahmedabad hospitals, got a new lease of life thanks to the organs donated by a 55-year-old brain-dead man on Friday.
Kantibhai Dhandhukia’s liver was transplanted into a 55-year-old woman patient from Ahmedabad while his kidneys were harvested by Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) for transplantation.
Dhandhukia, a resident of Olpad of Surat district, was declared brain-dead on Thursday by doctors at Jayaben Modi Hospital in Ankleshwar town of Bharuch district.
Dhandhukia was undergoing treatment at the hospital after he met with an accident on Wednesday.
Dhandhukia suffered serious injuries after his bike was hit by a wild boar on the Hansot-Olpad road.
A passer-by rushed him to a nearby hospital and later Dhandhukia was shifted to Jayaben Modi Hospital.
Treating doctors found that he had suffered brain-haemorrhage.
After declaring Dhandhukia brain-dead on Thursday, doctors informed Donate Life founder Nilesh Mandlewala about the case.
“As soon as we received the message, we reached the hospital and met Dhandhukia family members and explained to them about the organ donations.
The family agreed for cadaver donations,” Mandlewala said.
“After receiving the consent, we approached State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) convener Dr Pranjal Modi in Ahmedabad for further process.
The liver was allotted to Ahmedabad-based private hospital and two kidneys were harvested by Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC),” Mandlewala told TOI.
“Our entire family is involved in charitable activities.
My brother Manoj is a regular blood donor.
My brother-in-law Mukesh is also engaged in social activities through Daksh Prajapati Foundation.
We have lost our father, but his organs would give new life to three persons,” said Pradeep, Dhandhukia’s son.
Dhandhukia was survived by wife Kamuben (54), sons Pradeep, Pankaj, Manoj, and daughter Sheetal.
