Last Friday, India finally allowed Covid vaccines for pregnant women.
After refusing to vaccinate them for months, the government swung the reverse view that they “can and must be” vaccinated.
“Vaccination is beneficial for them and must be given,” said ICMR Head Dr.
Balram Bhargava.
This makes India only the 18th country to “recommend” vaccines for all pregnant women.
There are 28 other countries that “allow” covid vaccines in pregnancy, but without open boost.
46 other countries allow restrictions, or deny the exception, data from the Comit (Ibu Covid-19 immunization tracker), developed by the Bioetika Institute of Johns Hopkins Berman and Johns Hopkins Center for immunization research, shows.
Large risk of covid in pregnancy, new policies will entertain crores women who will get pregnant between now and the end of the pandemic.
Every year, around 2.5 crore children are born in India.
So, some pregnant women crore and their families have grappled with anxiety, illness and death through two large Covid waves since March 2020.
Research conducted in this period has shown that Covid is risky for most people.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said pregnant women over the age of 35 were obese, or suffering from diabetes or hypertension “at certain risks of serious results from Covid-19.” Royal College Royal College of Obstetricia and Gynecology (RCOG) said, “Women with Covid-19 at the end of pregnancy two to three times more likely to give birth before the time, which can affect their baby’s long-term health.” Data analyzed by the US center for controlling and prevention of disease (CDC) last year also showed that, “compared to women who are not pregnant, pregnant women are more often accepted in the ICU, receiving invasive and ecmo ventilation.” Overall, there is “70% increased risk of death associated with pregnancy.” Delays due to lack of Datatere have never doubts about the need to vaccinate pregnant women but doubts emerge from lack of safety data.
Pregnant women were not included in the vaccine trial last year, so there were unanswered questions about the possibility of “miscarriage, low birth weight, premature birth, birth birth and innate anomalies,” statements from the Federation of Content and the Content of the Indian case (Fogsi) said.
For India, the decision will be more difficult because only one of the three vaccines – the covishield – approved, and only two other countries – Canada and Mexico – ‘Recommend’, while Austria, Iceland and Croatia ‘allows him to pregnancy.
So, the data for safety and efficacy in pregnancy is the sparse relative to data for the MRNA vaccine used in the US and elsewhere.
When RCOG Britain said, “There are no concerns reported with the Astra-Zeneca (covishield) vaccine in pregnancy, but there is less experience in pregnancy with this vaccine than with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine.” But it convinced to add: “Study of vaccines in animals to see effects in pregnancy show no evidence that vaccines cause damage to pregnancy or fertility.” Covishield in other countries, 35 countries offer covishield to pregnant women, most of them with limits.
Pregnancy is known to increase the risk of blood clots, and so is the ‘vector virus’ vaccine like a covishield.
This is one reason some countries avoid giving it to pregnant women.
However, RCOG said two types of blobs were not related.
“Someone is not necessarily a higher risk of serious side effects just because they have a higher risk of other blood clots.” It must eliminate doubts, pregnant women have about taking covishield.
What about Sputnik, Covaxin? Sputnik V is also a virus vector vaccine and is available for pregnant women in four countries, which only recommends Mexico.
Argentina and Honduras allowed it with conditions, and Pakistan’s position was unclear.
Covaxin is available for pregnant women only in India.
It was made with a virus that was killed, and because this type vaccine was known to be safe in pregnancy, one of the points made at the meeting of May 28 Indian vaccine adviser group NTagi was: “Because the vaccine killed has a well-established safety profile in pregnant women, vaccine covaxin / Killed may be the first choice for pregnant women.
“However, on Friday, the government’s announcement did not make a difference between covishield and covaxin for pregnant women.
