Chennai: Minister of Water Resources Tamil Nadu S Duraimurugan went to New Delhi on Monday to meet with the Union Jal Minister Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to discuss the Karnataka Government Dam project.
The meeting will take place on Tuesday.
The multi-crore project is proposed across the Cauvery river near the inter-country border that fear Tamil Nadu will affect the flow.
This is the first meeting of the Minister of Tamil Nadu with the Union Minister to discuss various problems with water resources, including water disputes between countries arising from the dam built on the Markandeya River, Pennaiary tributaries, in recent years.
“I’ll talk about Mekedatu and the Markandeya River.
There are some problems,” Duraimurugan told reporters at Chennai Airport.
On Sunday, the Chairman of the Minister M K Stalin categorically reaffirms the State Stand on the Mekedatu Dam project.
In a letter to his carnataka partner BS Yediyurappa, Stalin said, “While a water draw from the river for the use of drinking water in Bengaluru’s metropolitan city has been permitted by the court, for that reason as an excuse to build the main reservoir in Mekedatu like that in Mekedatu, which Too far from the Bengaluru Metropolitan area does not sound valid.
“Previously, Yediyurappa on Saturday told Stalin that the implementation of the project would not affect the interests of the Tamil Nadu agricultural community.
The Tamil Nadu government petition challenged the Mekedatu project was waiting before the Supreme Court, as well as the Karnataka application before the Union Government requested approval to refer to the environmental impact assessment study.
