Udhagamandalam: Researchers from the Molecular Biodiversity Laboratory in the Ministry of Zoology and Biology Wildlife in Government Arts College in Ooty have found insects without new wings in nilgiris.A research papers on new species have been published at the International Journal Biologia published by natural springer.
“The old insect that flew 1mm had been named Bionychiurus Tamilensis because it was recorded in Tamil Nadu,” said Professor Associate and the Head of the Laboratory of R Santil.
“There are only six species under this genus who are reported so far throughout the world and are reported only from high altitude in Switzerland, China and Korea.” Insect was first observed in 2018 in a sample of land collected from the Ooty Government Arts University campus.
Further surveys showed their presence in the meadow and samples of unsuccessful humus soil.
“We cannot isolate species from the land collected from agricultural land and waste dumping yards.
We assume this because of the presence of pesticides and is a soil pollution indicator,” Sanil said.
“Endemic, similar genus is not reported even from the Himalayas or the Northeast region.” Scientists believed the genus deviated around 450 million years ago, said Muhsina Thunisa, the lead author of the research paper.
Insects describe the waste material to nutrition and feed the soil profile.
DNA is carried out and the details are stored in the NCBI database.
None of the similar specimens obtained from other parts of the world are barcodes to date.
Specimens of men and women from species are stored in an Indian Zoological Survey in Kolkata for future reference, Thunisa added.
