Chennai: Madras High Court has suggested that the Tamil Nadu government considers appoint a special team led by IAS officers for the maintenance of the right Marina Beach.
“The beach is not well maintained and often fulfilled, and no one cares,” the bench of the Justice Division and Kirubukan and Justice T V Thamilselvi said on Thursday.
Therefore, why did the government not appoint a special team consisting of officials from City Corporation, the Department of Public Works, Police, local council members, environmental lovers, social workers and merchant representatives, all led by IAS officers, observed benches.
The team can maintain the cleanliness and maintenance of the marina because it is one of the main tourist attractions of the country, he said.
The court then directed the state government and Greater Chennai Corporation to submit a report with the details of the amount of waste produced on the beach every day and the steps taken to eliminate the same.
The authorities have also been directed to notify the court about the number of toilets and cellular toilets available on the beach for visitors.
It is separate, the court wants the authorities to explain the income produced from the coast and the budget spent on its maintenance every year.
The report must also contain the details of the scheme and the steps taken or will be taken by the corporation to maintain the coast or to increase its beauty, the court added.
The judges have also directed authority to explain the steps taken to build an exclusive fish market near the loop road to prevent fish vendors and community vendors.
The court then Suo Motu opposed zonal officers, the Vending of Corporation Committee and Commissioner of the City Police (COP).
It directs the police to explain whether the proper police protection is provided on the beach and if the police booth is available at various points to prevent crime, considering the beach has a visitor even after 14:00 in the pre-covid period.
The authorities have been directed to submit a report on July 22.
The court then issued a temporary order on the request to find directions to the company to distribute ice cream sellers on the beach.
