EU to Get More than 1 billion Covid vaccines at the end of September

BRUSSELS: The European Union hopes to get over 1 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines from the end of September in four drugmakers, a record presented to EU leaders on Friday shows. The report, seen by Reuters and ready by the European Commission, demonstrates that the EU hopes to receive 413 million doses in the next quarter of the calendar year, and a second 529 million at the July-September interval, later getting 106 million from the quarter. The more than 1 billion doses anticipated from the end of September will be enough to immunise the full EU population of 450 million, well outside the EU’s first objective of vaccinating at least 70 percent of its elderly population at the end of the summermonths. The estimates take into consideration just vaccines in four drugmakers: Pfizer-BionTech, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca and also Moderna. They exclude dosages from German biotech company CureVac and French drugmaker Sanofi, that were signed contracts with the EU for countless millions of doses but are still trying hard to build up their vaccines and have them accepted by EU regulators. Pfizer and BioNTech accounts for more than half of equipment from the next quarter of the year and also for almost 40 percent of deliveries in the next quarter, the record stated. The EU hopes to get yet another 452 million doses at the fourth quarter of this calendar year, including a couple million in AstraZeneca, though it was required to provide all of its 300 million contracted doses at the end of June.
