Nagpur: This district is among nine in the state that is considered the most vulnerable to climate agricultural pressure.
However, 6.78% of the middle zone area of the Vidarbha has been categorized as very vulnerable in research research, ‘socio-economic vulnerability to climate development – index development and mapping for districts in Maharashtra’.
This study highlights how extreme climate conditions greatly affect the livelihood and the agrarian economy of Maharashtra.
This was done by Chaitanya Adhav at the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) -National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal, Haryana, under the guidance of R Sendhil from the ICAR-India Institute of Wheat and Barley Research.
This study was brought forward that from 36 districts in the state, 11 was very vulnerable to extreme weather events, droughts and shrinking water security.
“The districts have contributed nearly 40% of the area trimmed in all middle Maharashtra,” said this study.
Apart from this, 37% of the state agricultural territory, spread in 14 districts, was found quite vulnerable, which took counting up to three quarters of the regions trimmed by Maharashtra as high as vulnerable to the applicable climate crisis.
According to the researchers, Nandurbar is the most vulnerable district of cyclones, floods, droughts, changing the pattern of rainfall and extreme temperatures, which affect the production of plants.
10 very vulnerable districts that are very vulnerable are Buldhana, Beed, Jalna, Aurangabad, Hingoli, Parbhani, Nanded, Akola, Amravati, and Washim.
The study also included 14 districts – districts as quite vulnerable – Dhule, Jalgaon, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Sangli, Solapur, Osmanabad, Latur, Yalmal, Wardha, Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gondia and Gadchiroli.
“The dominant plants of these districts that will bear the burden of the climate crisis are jowar, rice, wheat, sugar cane, cotton, yeast, cashew nuts, wheat, and millet,” he added.
About 6.78% of the Central Vidarbha region is set as very vulnerable.
Adhav said, “The findings show that most of the regencies that are very vulnerable are below the Central Maharashtra Highlands zone.
Nine districts including Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Nashik, Satara, Kolhapur, Ahmednagar, Nagpur and Pune were found at least vulnerable to climate agriculture pressure .
“Climate experts have warned that countries such as Maharashtra need to develop their climate action plans to overcome the crisis and reduce emissions.
“District mapping shows that there is an instant need for policy efforts focused on overcoming socio-economic vulnerability in the Maharashtra Central Highlands zone.
In addition, the policy-making process must include input from as many stakeholders as possible before implementation.
In the end, the results of the level adaptation strategy Micro must be reflected at the country level, “Adhav said.
