Aamsu writes to MHA, seeks action against NRC coordinator

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (Aamsu) has asked the MHA to take action against state National Register of Citizens (NRC) coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma for his “biased activities” and failure to issue rejection orders to those excluded from the updated list of citizens.
Aamsu, a stakeholder in the NRC monitoring case before the Supreme Court, in a letter to the MHA secretary on June 7, said the “bias” had prompted the NRC coordinator to file two interlocutory applications (IAs) in the Supreme Court on May 11, seeking a comprehensive re-verification of the complete list of citizens published on August 31, 2019.
“..by way of filing IAs before the Supreme Court, the incumbent state coordinator not only imputes insincerity and mala fide to the nodal officer/the then state coordinator but also expressly casts aspersions as to the role of the Supreme Court in monitoring the entire NRC exercise.
This is a gross misrepresentation of the meticulous and judicious supervision and monitoring of the court which was constantly updated on each and every issue arising with the preparation of the NRC and is a grave attack on the competence of the Hon’ble Court, which cannot be countenanced,” the letter written by Aamsu presidentRejaul Karim Sarkar and legal advisor Mustafa Khaddam Hussain read.
The Aamsu mentioned that Sarma projected the “final NRC” as a “draft NRC as well as supplementary list” with a view to discarding the entire exercise carried out under the direction and supervision of the apex court.
It said only remaining step under the Schedule to the Rules, 2003 is the NRC Appeal process under Clause 8.
