New Delhi: Aam Party Aadmi Mla Sanjeev Jha on Saturday urged Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal to allow people to do Puja Chhath on the banks of the Yamuna River.
In a letter to the Governor LT, the AAP leader said the celebration of the Puja Chhath could not cause pollution in the river when worshipers cleaned Ghats (River Bank) to perform rituals.
He also sought an appointment from the governor LT to discuss the problem with him.
It came a day after the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) said that the celebration of Chhath Puja will be allowed at designated sites in the city, except on the banks of river Yamuna.
“I have asked the Governor LT to allow Chhath Puja on the banks of the Yamuna River for those who believe in Chhath Puja clean the ghats and rivers before performing the ritual,” said JHA in a statement.
Chhath Puja “never lead to” pollution in the Yamuna, he added.
In his letter to the Governor LT, AAP MLA noted DDMA has stated that Chhath Puja can not be celebrated on the banks of Yamuna.
“In fact, every year, Purvanchalis Delhi observe Chhath Puja on the banks of the Yamuna,” he argues.
LT attract the attention of the governor on this issue, JHA says Commissioner Division told him at the meeting that Chhath Puja can not be celebrated this year on the banks of Yamuna “because it increases the level of pollution in the river as happened during the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi and Durga Puja”.
“I want to tell you that on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi and Durga Puja, Idol Immersion takes place on the river, while Chhath Puja is a festival that is celebrated entirely in natural friendship,” says AAP MLA to his letter to the governor LT.
People who have faith in this puja ghat and river clean up before performing the ritual, he added.
Chhath puja four days this year falls on November 8 to 11.
