Surat: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday launched a demonstration against Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) proposition to sell government property in various areas of the town. But later in the afternoon that the allegations were refuted by BJP’s officer bearer at SMC through the general body meeting. Earlier in the morning, AAP set up enormous banner ads at Varachha and Udhna Darwaja from the planned sale of government property. The banner ads compelled the authorities and SMC teams to swing into action. The banners were eliminated and five associates of AAP were later arrested by authorities in Salabatpura police channel. Meanwhile, the Dharmesh Bhanderi, chief of resistance from SMC, alleged the ruling faction has neglected in handling the affairs of this corporation. “If SMC is facing a fiscal crisis they need to accept the officer and officials bearers have neglected to deal with the business effectively. Government property shouldn’t be sold to make money, instead it needs to be used for developing wellness centers, libraries, sports or gardens complexes,” Bhandari, an AAP pioneer, stated during a media briefing held prior to the general board meeting of SMC. “We didn’t understand that SMC is planning to market five plots, four at the Vesu region and a single in Mota Varachha neighborhood. As a result of our demonstration SMC’s preferred office bearers explained from the overall board meeting that there’s not any such strategy,” Bhanderi told TOI. Afterwards, SMC’s standing committee chairman Paresh Patel issued a warning. “The allegations are baseless. There’s absolutely not any such procedure undertaken with the standing committee until today. Before levelling allegations AAP needs to produce documentary proof.”
