New Delhi: The government on Thursday told Rajya Sabha that the problem of providing classical status to Marathi language was under the active consideration of the Ministry of Culture, and a positive decision in this case would be taken soon.
Replying complementary during the question and answer hours, the Minister of State for Arjun Ram Meghwal said this problem was under “active considerations” and the government in accordance with the most important for Indian.
Six languages so far have been given classical language status, he said.
The Ministry of Culture has been authorized for the work of granting classical status according to the notification of the Ministry of Home, Meghwal said.
“The ministry has established a linguistic committee and this problem then went to the academy sahitya and moved forward very positively.
Positive decisions will be taken immediately,” he told the house.
He said the inter-minister’s consultation continued and immediately the decision would be taken, and parliament would be told about it.
“The proposal for classical status for Marathi is under the active consideration of the Ministry of Culture,” said Minister of Culture G Kishan Reddy in his written answer.
To another complement, Meghwal said, the Linguistic Expert Committee was looking into it and some shortcomings about Marathi’s language background were removed.
“The country is proud of marathi and maratha history.
The problem is under active consideration and moving forward positively and immediately the decision will be taken on this matter.
We will immediately make a decision,” Minister said.
Asked why it was waiting for so long, he said it took time when there was a discussion between inter-ministers and the Ministry of Culture, home and education involved.
