KABUL: Women’s journalist in Afghanistan said that they were banned from working by the Taliban who had followed the control of the country and who had assured that women would be permitted to work in accordance with sharia law.
They also asked the Taliban to respect their rights to work, Tolo News reported.
Shabnam Khan Dawran, anchor in RTA (Afghan television radio) said that the Taliban had not allowed him to enter his office to continue his work.
“I want to go back to work, but unfortunately they don’t allow me to work.
They told me that the regime had changed and you couldn’t work,” Dawran was quoted by Tolo.
Other journalists Khadija said that he was also prohibited by the Taliban from work.
“I went to the office but I was not allowed to enter.
Then other colleagues were also banned.
We talked to our new director who had been appointed by the Taliban,” Khadija said.
Khadijah said that the Taliban told them that the decision would be made soon about their work.
“There have been changes in the program, they broadcast the desired program, there are no female presenter and female journalists,” Khadija said, Tolo News reported further.
It was even as the Taliban at their first press conference after controlling Afghanistan said that women’s rights would be “respected with the Islamic legal framework.” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid assured that the group was committed to providing women with their rights based on Islam.
“The Taliban is committed to providing women with their rights based on Islam.
Women can work in the health sector and other sectors where they are needed.
There will be no discrimination against women.” The Taliban also announced “general amnesty” for all Afghan government officials and urged them to return to work, including women who correspond to sharia law.
