Afghanistan: United Nations Humanitarian Agent calls for greater support as a winter approach

ROME: United Nations Humanitarian Agents and their partners urged countries to respect their promises to Afghanistan, when they rushed to increase the delivery of saving lives in the winter period to come there.
Afghanistan is among the worst humanitarian situation in the world before the Taliban with the assumption of strength in August, which has deepened the needs and vulnerabilities.
The $ 606 million flash appeal was launched in September to help more than 10 million Afghans who are vulnerable to less than 40 percent funded.
Humanity warns that the promise and commitment of donors “must be converted immediately” before it’s too late.
“Afghanistan is borrowing time,” said Mary-Ellen McGroarty, a representative of the World Food Progamme (WFP) in the country.
“I’ve never seen a crisis revealed at this speed and scale.” Afghanistan suffered decades of conflict and displacement, and chronic poverty, severe drought, and now the Covid-19 pandemic.
Nearly half of the population, more than 18 million people, need help assistance to survive, while conflict and unsafe sense has been displaced more than 3.5 million, with almost 700,000 removed this year.
The state health system failed and the economy was on the verge of collapse.
Women’s rights and girls, and minorities, are also serious under threat.
“We witnessed the depth of the new residence when drought and the economic crisis pushed the price of food and fuel,” McGroarty said, emphasizing that the family desperately needed support because of the cold weather approach.
UN agencies and partner organizations respond to the crisis despite financial shortcomings, logistics challenges and what they describe as “increasingly complex geo-political situations.” Ramiz Alakbarov, the leading UN humanitarian officials in Afghanistan, said the countries “may not pay collective failure prices”, and deserve to live in peace and dignity.
“We will try hard to respond to the needs of all women, men and children in Afghanistan,” he said.
“We will continue to advocate for women’s rights and girls, and minority groups, as well as rights to work, food, health care, education, and safety,” he added.
