WASHINGTON: Veteran Forester Randy Moore has been named the Head of the US Forestry Service, the first African American to lead the agency in 116 years.
Moore, 66, replaced Vicki Christiansen, who had led the agency since 2018.
Forestry Service, a division of the Ministry of Agriculture, oversees 193 million hectares of public land in 154 national forests and 20 national meadows.
Moore has served as a regional forester in the Southwest California Pacific region since 2007, where he has responsibility for 18 national forests in California and Hawaii.
He will take over from Christiansen as head of the 30,000 employees after retiring on July 26.
Christiansen and Moore will collaborate on what has formed as a season of severe forest fires in the west, where epic drought is inadequate by climate change.
, it has made a firite that is more challenging and tense firefighting resources throughout the region.
At the Pacific Northwest, where the expanded heatwives have triggered a record of record breaking in Oregon and Washington State, fire trucks have been positioned in high-risk areas, and cities and districts have imposed a burn of burns.
Tom Vilsack’s agriculture secretary, who appointed Moore, called him a catalyst for change and creativity in carrying out the forestry service mission to support the nation’s forest.
As a regional forester, Moore has been at the forefront of climate change, especially leading the regional response to a dramatic increase in awesome forest fires in California over the past decade, Vilsack said.
The recording of the proven footage of supporting and developing employees and placing the community in the center of the forest office works it well to lead agencies to the future at this critical time in our country, Vilsack said in a statement.
Senator Dianne Feinstein, D-California, praised Moore’s selection as Head of Forestry Service.
California understands very well challenges facing our forests and I am happy to be a California will overcome efforts to overcome them, “he said.
Arkansas rep.
Bruce Westerman, the Best Republican Party in the DPR Natural Resources Committee, called Moore an experienced professional, added: I sincerely hope we can work with disaster forest fire mitigation, opening our national forest for sustainable timber harvesting, making the forest more resilient.
against insects and diseases and more.
Before heading towards the southwest Pacific region, Moore was a regional forester in the Eastern region based in Wisconsin, where he oversees forests in 20 states.
Moore began his Fedner’s career in 1978 at the USDA natural resource conservation service in North Dakota.
He has worked in a national forest in Colorado, North Carolina and Missouri, a national meadow in Kansas and as an administrator in Washington.
Moore’s appointment came as a Congress and Push Administration Biden to improve firefighters and change at least 1,000 seasonal forest firefighters to workers throughout the year when fires have grown worse.
President Joe Biden last week called for a federal salary increase in firefighters, which began as low as $ 13 per hour.
It was a very low salary to pay federal firefighters, said Biden.
It will end in my administration.
