Athens: Greek-right-right government has created a new ministry to overcome the effects of climate change and named the former European Union Commissioner Christos Stylianides as minister.
Stylianides, 63, who served as Commissioners for Humanitarian and Crisis Assistance between 2014 and 2019, were appointed after large forest fires that burned more than 1,000 square kilometers (385 square miles) forests on the island of Evia and in South Greece.
.
Cyprus citizens, Stylianides will be awarded Greek citizenship before being sworn on on Friday, Government spokesman Yiannis Economou said.
The appointment was announced on Monday after a previous candidate, the former Head of the Armed Forces and Defense Minister Evangelos Apostolak, withdrew, citing the lack of cross-party consensus promised for new posts.
As a minister of crisis of the climate and civil protection, Stylianids will lead fire outages, disaster assistance and policies to adapt to increased temperatures produced from climate change.
“ I have received (position) with full awareness of the challenges and expectations that accompany it.
The consequences of climate change have followed us, and we must accelerate large changes without delay, “said Stylianes.” Disaster prevention and readiness are the most effective weapons we have.
