Two world records fell on Saturday when Kenya Agnes Tirop surged to victory in the 10 km race and Senbere Teferi Teferi won within 5 km at an event at Herzogogaurach, Germany.
Tirop, a world 10,000 m bronze winner twice, won the 10 km event with 30 minutes and one second, finished in front of Sheila Chepkirui and shaved 28 seconds from the record previously set by Asmae LeGhzaoui Marocco 19 years ago.
“I’m very happy to break the world record,” Tirop said.
“I feel very good and Sheila helps me a lot.
The course is also very good.” Chepkirui was finished with 30:17, also in the previous record time, but it was not suitable for Tirop, which separated with two kilometers to go and surge into the finish line.
In the race 5 km, Teferi finished at 2:30 p.m., overthrew the record 14:44 set by Kenya Beatrice Chepkoech.
“I’m very happy,” said Teferi, who finished sixth at 5,000 m at the Tokyo Olympics.
“After the Olympics, I know I was ready to pursue this world record.”
