Coimbatore: District green cover can increase in the next few years because the Ministry of Agriculture has launched a boost to get farmers to plant trees and care for them.
The Ministry of Agriculture has ordered 3.43 leaves of lakh trees for coimbatore under a scheme called the Tamil Nadu mission on sustainable green cover on agricultural land.
While the distribution of tree puppies will begin in a week, officials plan to solve it in a month due to conducive conditions for plantations with countries that receive heavy rain recently.
The main objective of this scheme is not only to increase the country’s tree cover but also farmers’ income.
R Chithra Devi, First Director of Agriculture, Coimbatore Regency, said the Ministry of Agriculture has placed orders for puppies with the Ministry of Forestry.
“Farmers must register through the Uzhavan application and can accept tillers from designated nurseries for free.
Small and micro farmers, female farmers and farmers from scheduled caste and scheduled tribes will be given preferences,” he said.
Wooden value species such as teak, red sandals, acacia, vengai, sandals, Manjal Kadambu, Rosewood, Malai Vembu (Melia Dubia), Mahagony, Karumarufhu, Poovarasu and tree value of drugs such as Neem, Punuthamaram, Thandrikkai, Thoobamaram, Gooseberry India, Still Maram , Chinnamon, Manila Tamarind and Vilvam will be distributed.
Agricultural officials said farmers would receive Rs 7 per tree for each year as an incentive for three years between the second and fourth year.
Farmers will get 50 puppies for one hectare if they plant it in Bund, while farmers who want to take tree cultivation in agricultural fields will get 160 puppies per hectare.
A official said Coimbatore City had better tree protection among the five major cities in the state according to a survey conducted last year.
When it comes to the coimbatore district forest area standing second with 1,975 SQKM only preceded by the district eroded by 2.307sqkm.
The official said in phase one, 73 lakh puppies will be distributed to farmers throughout the state with a cost of RS 28.57 Crore and during phase two, 112 lakh puppies will be distributed at a cost of 43.84 crores.
