MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu government would issue an order (GO) to waive agricultural loans obtained by farmers by pledging gold jewellery weighing up to five sovereigns, said minister for cooperatives I Periyasamy on Wednesday.
The minister said there were allegations that the loans of people who were not farmers had been waived by the previous AIADMK government.
This would be reviewed and action would be taken, he said.
The minister was speaking to reporters after chairing a meeting of the cooperative societies in the southern districts.
Minister for commercial taxes and registration P Moorty, minister for revenue and disaster management K K S S R Ramachandran and Madurai district collector Dr S Aneesh Sekhar and others participated in the meeting at the collectorate.
Disbursal of crop loans and fertilizer distribution to farmers through the cooperative societies were reviewed at the meeting.
Periyasamy told reporters that a target of more than Rs 11,500 crore had been set for providing loans to farmers through the primary cooperative societies.
He said the government led by M K Stalin was committed to the welfare of farmers and people from the poorer sections of society.
Farmers should inform collectors about any crop damage due to disasters and appropriate action would be initiated, he said.
All the election promises of the DMK would be gradually fulfilled, he said.
