Ahmedabad: The crematorium construction work proposed for Kamla Nehru zoo animals in Kankaria in Ahmedabad has begun and is expected to be completed within four to five months.
CNG-based cremation incinerators are being built by the street light department at a cost of Rs 52.17 lakh.
Zoo officials say on Thursday that the crematorium – the first of its kind in the country – will be used exclusively for birds and animal zoos and that no proposal allows registered pets to be cremated there for a fixed cost.
This proposal was prepared in 2019 and sent to the Central Zoo Authority whose grants were also accepted.
“This will be an exclusive crematorium for animals and residents in the zoo,” said a senior AMC official.
Zoo officials say that smaller animals and birds die in the zoo are buried until now, while larger animals are cremated using firewood.
“New crematoriums will be intended exclusively for birds and zoo animals.
There are no proposals to allow other registered pets to be cremated here,” said Superintendent Zoo R K Sahu, which added that the crematorium was expected to be completed four to five months.
He added that very few birds and dead animals every year at the zoo, and new facilities will be useful for the zoo.
“This is clearly the first of its kind in the state.
Maybe there are only four or five such crematoriums in this country,” said Sahu.
