Ahmedabad: The only place in the city that has experienced a land subsidence that can be ignored in the past few years is the 610-year-old UNESCO World Heritage zone in the walled city.
In fact, the Study of the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) shows that there has been an increase in groundwater levels 75.59 million in this field, thus preventing land deposits in the zone.
Overall, this study shows that there has been a high subsidence in the southeastern part of the city and west.
Moderate subsidence in the middle-east and low subsidence in the central zone.
A senior official Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) from the engineering department told TI that land subsidence was never examined during the city planning plan and engineering.
“This is a research problem that the number of covers that occur in certain zones may be caused by cracks that develop in civil pathways because of a gradual decline in the fields.” Every day, AMC supply is 1,369 million liters for around 72 Lakh residents.
But every day, city corporation receives 1,739 million liters of waste.
The difference shows that amdavadis draws 370 million liters of extra water from the soil every day.
The ISR study claims that ground water drawn for drink purposes is not the only cause of the basic subsidence.
The decline in land in the southeastern part of the city also covers a large portion of agricultural fields in the Taluka Daskroi, while in the western western region near Bopal there is a large agricultural field which also pumps water.
Obviously, the basic subsidence in Ahmedabad is a combination of groundwater extraction for the purposes of drinking, industry and agriculture.
“Long-term water harvesting produces a land subsidence mainly due to reducing pore pressure in aquifer system and further because of surface loading by construction activities in urban areas,” ISR study claims.
