Ahmedabad: Tax Relief for Bopal-Ghuma in Offing

Ahmedabad: Bopal-Ghuma, Chiloda, Kathwada resident, who has been slapped with a steep property tax bill – almost 2.5 times that exist – by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), can sigh of relief.
AMC plans to introduce a tax relief scheme for new areas acquired as expanded to Vastrapur, Jodhpur, Thaltej, Bodakdev, and an area side by side in 2006 when these areas were brought into AMC folds.
On Thursday, the chairman of the committee stood Hitesh Barot said that modalities for the scheme were being worked on.
“We are working on whether to extend the installment scheme or rebate scheme on existing property tax bills such as extended in 2006,” Barot said.
At that time for the first year, residents of Thaltej, Bodakdev, Vastrapur etc.
paid 25% of the number of bills and 50% the following year so that at the end of the fourth year, 100% of the bill was restored.
Before AMC took over Bopal-Ghuma, 40,000-residents of the area cumulatively paid Rs 5 Crore in taxes.
After AMC issued a tax bill, they expect income to rise to RS 15 Crore.
“Previously the property tax system was quite arbitrary.
For example, the apartment that appeared for the past 4 years paid based on the carpet area while other properties pay a flat charge in accordance with the old blanket assessment system,” said a senior assessment of South West Zone.
Most of the Bopal and Ghuma regions will be in the ‘C’ category of the city tax system, where the value of Jantri land is between Rs 7,000 and Rs 15,000, except for South Bopal which will be under the ‘B’ category.
“Usually the scheme will be announced when the area is brought under AMC’s jurisdiction, but because of the second wave of Covid, it is avoided.
Now we have served the 2006 Property Tax Bill in the 2006 scheme,” official AMC official said.
