Bhubaneswar: The Pathology Department with the treatment of laboratories in AIIMS Bhubaneswar has received funds from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to establish satellite brain banks with the aim of conducting nerve research.
The National Institute will establish this facility at his hospital in collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosces (Nimhans), Bengaluru.
“This will be the first of its kind in the eastern region and will improve the research on the nerves,” said Director of AIIMS BHubaneswar Gitanjali Batmanabane.
“We are happy to receive approval to regulate this brain bank.
Neurosciences are important areas and many jobs can be done in this field.
We can save the brain of a dead person and brain tissue from several patients after obtaining permission from parents or guardians of patients or people who are Died.
We will conduct research on the brain and the network, “Batmanabane said.
He said Suvendu Purkait, Associate Professor of the Department of Pathology with Laboratory Medicine, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, will be the main project coordinator.
The number of Rs 47.7 lakh has been subject to sanctions for the project for the first year.
This will help the Institute to establish Brain Bank, he added.
Purkait said the approved duration of the ICMR project was three years.
Annual extension will be given after reviewing the work done on the project during the previous year.
The brain bank will belong to AIIMS Bhubaneswar after the project is complete, he added.
“In Western countries, they have their own brain bank.
After someone dies because of brain disease, experts do molecular research in various parts of the brain to find out the causes of disease.
They also recommend what can be given further care for future improvement , “Purkait said.
This is part of the National Task Force (NTF) project entitled, “Indian Brain Bank Network Initiative: Forming Satellite Brain Bank in India for Nerve Research.” Nimhans already have a brain bank.
