BHUBANESWAR: AIIMS Bhubaneswar has received 15,891 outpatient department (OPD) patients in May after consulting with doctors via telemedicine and AIIMS Bhubaneswar Swasthya app despite closure of its walk-in OPD since April 26 in view of sudden surge of Covid-19 cases during the second wave.
“After screening through telemedicine and the Swasthya app, those who need physical consultation are called to OPD.
If needed, they are being admitted in indoor facilities for treatment.
In May, 1805 non-Covid patients were admitted in our hospital’s inpatient department (IPD).
We have conducted 314 major surgeries last month,” said Sachidananda Mohanty, medical superintendent of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
He said the hospital has performed 787 dialysis, 1075 chemotherapy and 573 radiotherapy sessions within one month from the shutdown of OPD services which affirms that AIIMS has continued to render critical care services to the seriously ill patients to a large extent despite the pandemic situation.
So far 39,309 non-Covid patients have been treated in our casualty since April 1 last year.
In May this year, 3,245 patients were treated in the hospital’s casualty and 78 life-saving emergency surgeries were conducted.
A total of 71,969 consultations through telemedicine and 15,054 consultations through Swasthya App have occurred during the last one year, said the official sources.
The hospital has treated 4,216 poor patients under the state government scheme of Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) in the last one year of the pandemic.
“According to our admission guidelines, indoor admission is provided as per availability of beds and no patient is ever admitted to the floors.
We may have to refer out some of these referred patients due to non-availability of indoor beds/ICU beds,” said Mohanty.
Similarly, the hospital has been providing treatment facilities to Covid patients too.
It has 362 Covid beds including 70 ICU beds with 70 ventilators.
The national institute has already treated 4,222 Covid patients as indoor patients and 953 patients in Covid-ICU from April 1 last year to April 30 this year.
Especially in April and May, 1536 Covid patients have been admitted for treatment and 382 Covid patients have been treated in Covid ICU during the last two months.
A total of 737 surgeries have been performed on Covid positive patients in emergency.
As many as 164 deliveries have been conducted in Covid patients.
The Institute has already tested 1, 19,998 Covid samples.
“We have an RT-PCR testing centre for the general public where 250-300 patients get tested daily and the test results are made available within 24-48 hours.
So far 33,227 people have been vaccinated in our hospital,” said Mohanty.
He said they have deployed more number of resident doctors and faculty along with nursing officers for Covid duty.
