AKTU to bear expenses of Covid orphan students

LUCKNOW: Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University will bear the academic expenses of students who have lost both parents or the only earning member of the family due to Covid-19.
The university will also provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to families of teachers who lost the Covid battle.
The decision was taken in the finance committee meeting of the varsity on Saturday.
“We will not just pay tuition or course fees of all sessions but also hostel fees, college bus and other academic expenses of the students who have lost both or the only earning member of the family due to Covid-19.
We will pay the expenses to the college on behalf of the student,” said AKTU vice-chancellor Prof Vinay Kumar Pathak.
He said that all academic institutions should come forward to support the education of such students amid the pandemic.
The varsity also sanctioned funds to award its Covid heroes: teachers and non-teaching staff who helped people in difficult times.
A reward of Rs 50,000 will be given to assistant registrar Ayush Srivastava and Rs 10,000 each to AKTU driver Tulsiram and ambulance driver of IET Ashok Kumar.
Centre for biotechnology: The proposal to set up a Center for Excellence in Biotechnology at AKTU’s Center for Advanced Studies was also passed.
A budget of about Rs 6 crore was sanctioned for it.
“Biotechnology is one of the fastest-growing multi-disciplinary branches of science.
The past couple of decades have witnessed a biotechnology boom worldwide with the development of products including antibiotics, recombinant and synthetic vaccines and others,” said AKTU spokesperson Asheesh Mishra.
Besides, a proposal to start BTech in biotechnology with 60 seats at Institute of Engineering Technology was also passed.
