MADURAI: The state government will build a sophisticated arena in Alanangallur to allow thousands of people to see the typical Jallikattu event, said Minister M Stalin on Friday.
Even though CM did not spell, the source said one suggestion was to design the arena on the Roman Colosseum lines, even on a much smaller scale.
The circular arena is what is planned, “they said.
Stalin made an announcement while inaugurating a scheme worth Rs 51.77 Crore and stone plate foundation for RS 50 Crore projects through video conferencing from Chennai.
“It is our responsibility to protect and develop Jallikattu, which is a game of Tamil culture courage.
As part of the steps to attract tourists and also develops the game, the sophisticated arena will be built in Alanangallur,” he said.
Stalin said the arena that could make thousands of spectators will also have a museum to show off the original breeds of livestock, animal hospitals, and many other facilities.
District collector Dr S Aneesh Sekhar said the site for the arena had been identified on the outskirts of Alanangallur.
The arena is currently in the heart of the city of Pancayat and is narrow.
The work will begin immediately and it takes around two years to complete it.
It will definitely be something that everyone from Madurai will be proud, “he said.

The number of Rs 18 Crore will be spent on renovating Veerasasantthartarar Mandapam which was damaged by the fire at the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple.
After that, Kumbabishekam will be held at the Temple in two years, Stalin said.
CM said that Rs 500 Crore has been intended to build underground drainage systems in the large regions of Madurai Corporation.
