LONDON: The fourth seed Alexander Zverev beat America Taylor Fritz 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Saturday to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon and match his best performance at the Grand Slamcourt Grand Slam.
Germany, which reached 16th round at the All England Club in 2017, maintained a low-delayed mistake and repeatedly tested the 31st seed American service, who underwent surgery less than a month ago after suffering a knee injury in Roland injured in Roland Garros.
After the first set left without a break serving, the 23-year-old Fritz lifted the game in the tie-breaker to lead against Zverev which failed to change two chances of breakpoint.
The players who traded the service break in the second set but Zverev, 24, converted the second chance to raise the match and then lead with one break in the third.
It was Zverev’s turn to play solid in the fourth set of tie-breakers and despite making a ninth double mistake he could close the contest when Fritz sent a long forehand.
Zverev hit 45 winners, 19 of them ACES, while keeping their mistakes that were not delayed up to 25.
Next for Germany will become the 16th seed Canada, Felix Auger-aliastion, who advanced to the round of 16 when Australia Nick Kyrgios retired with injury.
