Mumbai: Byculla Women’s Prison and Arthur Road Prison on Friday completed the first dose of vaccination to all 3,500 prisoners who nested in two Mumbai prisons.
A total of 250 women’s prisoners were vaccinated in the third round on Friday.
Vaccination camps are held in a joint venture by the State Prison Department and Project Mumbai, a city-based NGO.
“In addition to vaccinating 250 female inmates from byculla women’s prisons on Friday, 20 prison staff and 75 male inmates (from a byculla male prison and some of Arthur Road Jail) were also vaccinated.
The women who received vaccinations including three foreign nationals,” said Shishir Joshi, CEO and founder of Mumbai Project.
Previously, 10 foreign national women inmates, some of them caught charges of carrying drugs, vaccinated.
Byculla prison has two separate parts for male and female prisoners.
Prisoners in both parts of the prison face various charges such as theft, robbery, murder, criminal intimidation, drug ownership and drug smuggling.
Some prisoners of women also have children, under six years, with them in prison.
All vaccinated is given a paracetamol too.
There are around 300 women like on Friday in a byculla women’s prison.
Some prisoners of men and women were vaccinated in prison and guaranteed guarantees, previously released.
As on Friday, both prisons are Covid-19 free.
Drive Vaccination in City Prison began in June at Arthur Road Jail.
“Some prisoners, who were previously given a vaccine at Kasturba Hospital and completed their mandatory time frame, given the second dose,” the source added.
A total of 53 have not been vaccinated because some of them suffer from various diseases, some of which were infected with Covid19 before and would vaccinate once the doctor suggested a dose.
More than a dozen prisoners from Arthur Road Jail refused to take vaccinations, said sources.

1925 Building Arthur Road Jail, which has an official capacity of 804 inmates, currently accommodates 3010 inmates.

Our coordination and efforts of our medical and volunteers, prison officials and city corporations are commendable,” Joshi said.

Arthur Road Jail is the same place where economic violators such as Mehul Choksi, Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi etc.

Arthur Road Jail has 540 hardened prisoners, more than 300 prisoners arrested in murder and efforts to kill cases, dozens of those who face terror charges and 138 foreign nationals.
