The Greenfield airport was built on 271 hectares in Chipi-Parule in the Sindhudurg district with an estimated cost of Rs 520 Crore.
The airport has been in manufacture of eight years and construction by IRB Limited infrastructure developer, under the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation began in February 2013, said the release issued by the Press Information Bureau.
The inauguration marked the start of the 61st airport under the scheme of Udan and operationalization of 381 routes under Udan.
Financial incentives in the form of Viability Gap (VGF) funds are provided from the center, the state government and airport operators to drive airlines to encourage operations from airports that are not served and underwear under the scheme.
