According to the Chief Engineer BWSSB BM Somashekar, the distribution of water networks has changed in the city from time to time.
“Previously, we used to identify the ridge points where we would build a land surface reservoir and then the overhead tank.
The water used to be pumped into the tank and then gravity will help supply water to the nearest residential area.
However, time has changed and so too Has technology.
Now, most water tanks turn into white elephants because they are very expensive to be maintained with not many benefits.
Instead of using electricity to pump water and then spend money to defend it, we find it easier to supply water directly to consumers without Roiring it through a tank, “Somashekar told Bangalore Mirror.
Most of these tanks were built 30 to 40 years ago, said a BWSSB official.
“More than 50 tanks are built so that people will not have a lack of drinking water.
At that time, the amount of dependence on the tank was high.
Bore Wells increased in recent years.
Gradually, the dependence of overhead tanks declined.
Over time, some of these tanks too Damaged.
We have started to identify such tanks to dismantle them.

It has been safely dismantled.
This step came after a number of complaints from the public about the condition of the tank, “said another official, adding that technology using water also changed.
“Now many residents use RO filters.
Therefore, dependence on the overhead tank is almost zero.
Moreover, the cost of taking care of high tank water,” he explained.
BWSSB officials said that even though the tanks would be destroyed, the surface reservoir (GLR) built along with the tank would continue to function.
“At present, there are 56 GLR in the city.
We will continue to preserve it because they are very important in the distribution chain,” Somashekar explained.
DINESH Kumar, a resident of Rajajinagar said: “I feel that BWSSB must be prioritized in pampering the dead water tank.
If the tank is not used, there is a danger of climbing people, risking their lives.
It might end up being an illegal nest, even if the gate is locked .
Those who live near tanks are always at risk if the tank is in a dilapidated condition.

Meanwhile, BWSSB took action against those involved in the meter past.
So far, 3,774 connections are cut off and consumers are convicted because some are passed by meters.
Officials also tried to take the number of balances by billing again.
