BHUBANESWAR: The pass percentage in Class X state board exam reached a new high with 97.89% students clearing it.
The Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha, declared the results on Friday on the basis of alternative assessment for the first time.
The board exam had to be cancelled due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
“Of the 5,74,125 students who had registered for the exam, 5,62,010 students, which included 2,80,351 boys and 2,81,658 girls, cleared the annual high school certificate examination,” school and mass education minister Samir Ranjan Dash said.
The pass percentage is 19% more compared to the 78.76% last year and 26% more against the 72.76% in 2019.
As many as 2,656 students secured A1 grade (score above 90%) while 22,131 got A2 (above 80%), 52,299 got B1 (above 70%) and 94,475 bagged B2 (above 60%).
The performance is better compared to 1279 students in A1, 8,458 in A2, 18,188 in B1 and 31,328 getting B2 grades last year.
Like last year, girls did comparatively better, registering a pass percentage of 98.62% against boys scoring 97.16%.
Among the top scorers also girls outshone boys.
In A1 category, there are 1402 girls compared to 1254 boys.
While 7,703 students failed the examination, 4,412 were marked absent.
BSE president Ramashis Hazra said students who did not appear for the previous examinations — Class IX both half-yearly and annual and Class X practice tests — on the basis of which evaluation was done, were marked absent.
The board has given 40% weightage to Class IX results and 60% weightage to Class X tests while a school’s performance in the last four years were analysed and used to award grades to students.
Among those candidates who had failed in the board exam in the past, 47,060 of 53,279 who had appeared passed the examination (88%).
“This is an unprecedented situation.
We have tried to ensure that the results are in favour of students,” the BSE president said.
Form fill-up to sit for exam early next monthThe results evoked mixed response among students.
“I had set a target of securing more than 75% marks in the matriculation exam when I was promoted to Class X.
Now I have secured 460 out of 600, which is 77%.
I am happy with the result,” said Chandan Mohapatra from Sambalpur.
Chandini Sahu from Bhubaneswar, however, was not happy.
“I had prepared very well for the exam and would have got more than the 348 awarded to me had an exam been conducted.” Those not happy with the result, absentees, students pursuing studies in correspondence mode and through open schooling can appear for the exam to be conducted by the board when the situation gets better.
The examination process will be notified shortly.
The form fill-up may start by July 5, Hazra said.
