Mangaluru: At least 26 employees from a private seafood company rushed to the hospital after chemistry – very much becoming ammonia – leaked in the unit in a well on the suburbs of Mangalore City on Tuesday.
Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said about 80 employees were in the unit at the time of the incident.
The source said that after leakage was reported from fish storage and export units around 10am, 26 employees were rushed to a private hospital.
From them, 10 were discarded after the examination and 16 were in observation.
They are said because of danger.
Keerthi Kumar K, Environmental Officer, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, said the preliminary investigation said the cause of the incident was an ammonia leakage in the compressor flange and plugged in one hour.
As a precaution, employees are sent to the hospital to be examined.
A team of the Karnataka state pollution control agency, the factory and boiler and the customized disaster management authority visited the place.
Fire and emergency personnel are pressed into action.
The case has been registered at the Panambur Police Station.
