Amritsar police prevents child marriage

AMRITSAR: The marriage of a minor girl was prevented with the timely intervention of police in Punjab’s Amritsar district on Friday.
After consultation with the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), the girl was sent to ‘nari niketan’ while the boy was handed over to his parents.
The marriage of the minor girl with a 19-year-old boy was being solemnised in a house at Sandhu Colony in Mohkampura area of the city.
As per the sources, the girl is 13-plus while the boy is 16-plus.
However police claimed that the girl was 16-year-old while the boy was 19.
Sources said that the couple was first taken to a gurdwara for their marriage bu the shrine management refused to solemnise their marriage.
Assistant commissioner police (Headquarters) Dr Ripudaman Singh said that the couple was presented before that CWC that decided to hand over the boy to his parents while the girl had been sent to nari niketan till June 18.
