Jaipur: The customs department seized around 350 grams of gold worth 17 lakh at Jaipur International Airport on Friday.
This is the third seizure in 10 days.
Gold was intercepted from a passenger who landed from Dubai and officials claimed that at 90% of cases, ‘Operators or Mules’ did not know exactly what they were smuggled and carrying noble metals only a few thousand rupees.
Officials also said that most cases, the operator turned into people who were in the work of blue venture abroad and most were native residents of the Saurur or Shekhawati belt.
In recent seizures on Friday night, customs officials at Jaipur International Airport intercepted one passenger, who arrived from Dubai and after a thorough examination of his luggage, 349,810 grams of Gold worth RS 17,40,305 confiscated.
The gold was hidden in one coffee and spice grinding machines and three magnetic bracelets.
“At 90% of cases, while operators may have some hunches, they are not sure exactly what the package contains.
They are people who are sent abroad for work and after work for several months, they are unemployed so for return tickets and money , they get the package.
In fact, they don’t even know the identity of people who should take packages from them after they leave the airport even though the recipient knows the identity of the operator, “said a customs official.
Passengers carrying gold do not have information about smuggling rings.
Smugglers also ensure that gold brought from permissible values under the RS 20 Lakh so there is no risk of arrest.
Furthermore, the official said, “When the carrier was delayed out of the airport after we intercepted the gold, the recipient realized that something was wrong and not waiting.
