Apple Airtag does not come with a rechargeable battery and powered by a Lithium 3V CR2032 coin battery commonly found.
Depending on the use, you might be asked to change the airtag battery once every year.
While the CR2032 battery is easy to find, Apple has now mentioned in its support page that the CR2032 battery with bitter coatings may not work with airtag.

Tap the item tab.
Tap the airtag wearing the battery you want to check.
Check the battery icon with the name of the airtag.
If the accusation is very low, you will see a banner that says the battery is low.
