Wellington: New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the strict national chef was applied to clogging Covid-19 to help limit the spread of a very contagious Delta variant, even when the number of new cases rose on Thursday.
New Zealand reported 68 new cases on Thursday took the total number of people infected with the latest outbreak to 277.
Of the total cases, 263 were in Auckland and 14 were in the capital of Wellington.
All 5 million countries are still under home orders, with schools and most workplaces are closed up to at least the end of the month.
“Lockdown has an impact but delta is very complicated,” Ardern said at a press conference.
“We must be very vigilant.” New Zealand is mostly free of viruses since last year, except a small number of cases in February, but it changed last week after the outbreak of the Delta variant erupted in Auckland, pushing Arderdn to order a lock.
Ardern’s strategy to eliminate viruses using strict border control and snap lockdowns have extensive support in New Zealand, but the government has faced criticism for the progress of its vaccination, among the slowest at the OECD.
Elimination will continue to be a strategy of New Zealand until the majority of the population is vaccinated, Ardern said.
“No one wants to use a kuncian forever …
it’s not our intention,” Ardern said.
“But while we vaccinate, elimination is the goal.” About 80% of the population has not been fully vaccinated.
The government said 3 million doses had been given so far and a record of 87,000 vaccinated people in the past 24 hours.
