Phoenix: Senator State of Arizona Democrats Tony Navarrete has been arrested for suspicion of accusations who accused him of sexual behavior with minors, said the police on Friday.
The police received a report on Wednesday about sexual contact which allegedly occurred in 2019.
Navarrete, representing the West Phoenix district, was arrested on Thursday after detectives interviewed teenagers and witnesses, police said in a statement.
Navarrete, 35, was ordered to be imprisoned for suspected charges that covered various accusations of minor sexual behavior, said the statement.
Navarrete did not immediately respond to emails and telephone messages looking for comments.
The court record of the Navarrete case is not immediately available and it is not clear whether he has a lawyer who can comment on his name.
He is expected to make a court appearance early Friday afternoon.
Sergeant Andrew Williams, a spokesman for the police department, refused to provide additional information about this case, said the police did not want to draw attention to the case “for the sake of the victim.” Navarrete announced earlier this week that he had tested positive Covid-19 and was experiencing small symptoms when isolating at home.
Navarrete serves the term both in the senate after undergoing a term at home.
Democrats Senate said in a statement “aware of one of our members has been arrested and is awaiting further details and for law enforcement to do his work.
We will not have further comments at this time.” Senator Kelly Townsend said on Twitter he took The position that Navarrete is innocent unless it is proven guilty.
“However, if it is true, then I never want to look at you again, (in) Navarretea,” Townsend said in his tweet.
Arizona legislative is not in a session.
