Nagpur: The first batch of one lakh multi-mode grenade – the first indigenous ammunition in the country made by a private company – was handed over to the army by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday.
Multimode grenades, produced by the Economic Explosives Economic Nagpur (EEL), are arranged to replace M36, World War II design grenades made in weapons factories.
The project, which began in 1989, faced several technical challenges, mainly maintained the right time for the mechanism of delaying grenades.
The grenade exploded four seconds after the pin was taken.
Reaching this time is the biggest challenge, said source.
The eel in October last year was awarded a contract to make 10 lakh grenades for two years.
“We hope to finish order in 15 months,” said Chairman of Eel Satyanarayan Nuwal.
Eel is a 100% subsidiary of Solar Industries, a company based in the city.
The eel also signed the MoU to supply grenades to Indonesia.
