New Delhi: The Selection Board of the Army has cleared the road for the promotion of five female officers to Colonel ranks after they completed 26 years of “Reckonable Service”, the Defense Ministry said on Monday.
This is the first time the female officers who served with the signal corps, electronic and mechanical engineers (EME) and corps engineers have been approved to the rank of Colonel, the ministry said.

Previously, promotion to Colonel ranking only applies to female officers at the Army Corps (AMC), Judge Advocate General (JAG) and the Army Education Corps (AEC).
The five female officers chosen for the “Colonel Time Scale” is LT COL Sangeeta Sardana from the signal, LT COL Sonia Anand and LT COL Navneet Duggal from the Eme Corps, and LT COL Reenu Khanna and LT COL Ritcha Sagar from the corps engineer.
The displacement to rank Colonel to five female officers came a few days after the Supreme Court allowed female candidates to sit for the national defense entrance examination (NDA) scheduled to be held on September 5, in a temporary order.
“Widening of road inventories to more branches of the Indian Army is a sign of an increase in career opportunities for female officers,” the ministry said.
“Combined with the decision to provide a permanent commission to a female officer from the majority of the Indian Army branch, this step defines the Indian Army approach to gender neutral soldiers,” he said.
