Manali: The massive landslide near the village of Junda in the Himachal district of Lahaul-Spiti blocked the flow of the Chenab River on Friday.
Most of the mountain’s face collapsed suddenly and fell on the riverbed, blocking the flow of water in Chenab and a large lake formed upstream.
Nearly two dozen villages, both downstream and upstream, were evacuated.
Four houses sank, some livestock washed away and two women trapped in water were saved by villagers.
The large lake was formed after tons of debris blocked the river flow for more than two hours.
The water level becomes stable after the river successfully passes through debris, but the dangers of flooding the lake explosions make alert authority.
Two women from the village of Junda, Suman and Damyanti, who were trapped when the river water entered their homes, injured.
“I’m really in the water.
I can’t breathe for a long time and struggle to stay on the surface of the water.
I think I will die.
The water has risen until Damyanti’s neck.
We screamed help,” said Suman.
“River water from the dam like the lake is now flowing on the rubble.
Until the last report, the surface of the water has begun to recede below the level of the danger after starting to flow on the rubble,” said Lahaul-Spitan Police Manav Verma Inspector.
The Chenab River is in the Spate due to heavy rain and glacier smelting.
Chenab came from the Lahaul Valley when the Chandra and Bhaga River met in Tandi Village.
The river flows from Himachal to J & K before entering Pakistan
