GANDHINAGAR: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) president and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal will be in Gujarat on a day-long visit as the party looks to build on its electoral gains in the Gujarat local body polls and begin preparations for the assembly elections which are scheduled to be held in the second half of next year.
AAP had made an entry in Gujarat’s electoral politics by contesting the 2017 assembly elections.
However, the party failed to secure even a single seat in the elections held more than three years ago.
However, it bounced back strongly in the local body elections held this year, and fielded 2,567 candidates for the municipal corporation, municipalities, taluka panchayat and district panchayat elections.
AAP won 27 seats in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and 42 seats overall in the local body elections held earlier this year.
Party office-bearers said Arvin Kejriwal plans to visit the state frequently over the next one and a half years, as his party looks to spread its base in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat.
The party said a number of leaders are expected to join AAP in the presence of Arvind Kejriwal on Monday.
AAP state spokesperson Tuli Banerjee said that apart from inaugurating the party’s state headquarters, Kejriwal will also interact with workers from across the state.
“He will unveil AAP’s plans for Gujarat and a number of leaders are expected to join the party,” she said.
